How to Navigate the Course

Prepare Your Captain’s Logbook

Welcome to the theory behind Huber Social’s Social Impact Measurement and Management. In this theory course you’ll have access to the first five modules of the Huber Social Academy. To share our knowledge, we have crafted this course, designed to take you on a journey of discovery, grounded in a strong understanding of scientific, cultural and ethical integrity, so that approaches are fit for purpose.

Nautical analogies, delivered with a hint of cheekiness, are balanced with substantive instruction in social impact measurement. To suit all styles of learning, each module is delivered using a mix of stories, videos, lessons and exercises.

The structure

Each module kicks off with a short video. The videos convey the core message for the module, with a nautical story or two thrown in for good measure. These videos are designed to be engaging, but also to provoke new ways of thinking about social impact measurement and even challenge some of your existing perceptions. We hope they spark robust discussions within your organisation.

Once you’ve watched the video, you can dive into the written lessons. Here you will find more detailed information on each topic and any supporting tools or templates. As the social impact measurement and management sector is fast-moving and always changing, having written lessons allows us to keep you up-to-date.

The modules are rounded off with some practical applications (to be completed in your log book) and relevant Q&As.

Some modules are short and sweet, others are long and require a little more thinking.

Self-paced and self-directed learning

You have 6 weeks to complete the course, and the modules are designed to be completed roughly one per week. However, it’s all self-paced. So if you want to go faster, that’s up to you.

What we will remind you is that, as with all things in life, the effort you put into the course is very much correlated to the value you will get out of it. You can watch and read all the content and be done in a few hours if you like. But that’s not the point of this course. We want you to truly engage.

We recommend setting a day a week or an hour a day to apply your learnings to practical situations - either within your own organisation, working with others in the community, or even crafting a ‘based on real life, but made up’ project that captures your interest. This is what your log book is for.

Take your time to think through different points of view and how the lessons come to life for you. Dive into the additional resources or start researching on your own.

Avoid mobile

We encourage you to complete this course on a desktop or laptop. The bigger the screen the better. You’ll be more intentional about your studies and the content will be far easier to absorb.

The Impact Log Book is a PDF document for you to answer all the tasks and exercises within each module. While the course concludes after 6 weeks, you will keep this logbook with you.

If it works for you, print the document and go old school with pen and paper. Otherwise you can mark up the PDF or copy questions from the online modules into whatever format suits your needs.
